It is said that discrimination against Wiccans, Pagans, and Pantheists is the final civil rights frontier. More and more of such religious beliefs are "coming out of the broom closet" each year. Still there is a long way to go. It would help if the media would cover more Pagan culture. One easy way to get coverage is for us to have our holidays mentioned on mainstream calendars where everyone will see them. The Christian holidays of Christmas and Easter are almost universally listed on all calendars. So are the main Jewish holidays of Hanukkah and Passover. But who has bought a calendar that tells you when Samhain, Candlemas, Ostara, Beltane, or Lammas is? One could argue that Pagans are a minority in the US. And that is true. But Paganism is growing rapidly and estimates range from 100,000 to over 2 million Pagans, Pantheists, and Wiccans in North America! It is possible that Wicca alone is the fourth largest religion in America, behind Christianity, Islam, and Judaism! So why don't we get attention? Discrimination has kept many of us in the "broom closet" but times are changing. And calendars are one way to make us visible without putting any individual in danger. Therefore, I petition for government, in the same manner it would have records of the holy days of any other religion, to acknowledge the Pagan holidays as such: Samhain on October 31, Yule on December 21 or the Winter Solstice, Candlemas/Imbolc on February 1, Ostara on March 20 or the Spring Equinox, Beltane on May 1, Midsummer on June 21 or the Summer Solstice, Lammas/Lughnasa on August 1, and Mabon/Harvest Home on the Fall Equinox (September 22). Also I petition for fellow Pagans, Wiccans and Pantheists to get in touch with calendar companies and mention our request.
