It's frightening to me that with very little testing regarding human safety, 2/3 of our processed foods contains bio-engineered materials. While some are touting biotechnology for its potential to reduce hunger, decrease pesticide use, and conserve our natural resources, sufficient time has not passed for us to observe the effects of the genetically-engineered (GE) crops we have already released into our environment and our food supply. Scientists have already found risks associated with production and consumption of these foods. At the same time, farmers are finding that once these crops are released into the environment they are very hard to control, often contaminating non-GE crops that consumers want. This is a matter of profits being put before public safety, and neither the public nor farmers should be exposed to the possible risks of genetic engineering. Consumers have a right to know what ingredients are in their food. I urge Congress to stand up for public safety and demand stronger regulations on GE foods, including more rigorous testing and clear labeling.
