Let's put prayer back in public schools. Everyday, all public school students should be required to say thirty Hail Mary's, followed by a Wiccan incantation invoking the Goddess. Then at noon, all students should face Mecca and pray to Allah. Finally, to end the day on a religious and wholesome note, students will be required to participate in thirty minutes of meditation in the Tibetan Buddhist style. Let's also allow religious symbols such as the Ten Commandments to be posted in schools, but let's also include a figure of the god Ganesh in every school, as well as a Pagan altar and a crucifix. I hope anyone who has read this so far will have realized by now that this is sarcasm. By reading this, maybe you will begin to realize how silly, as well as how exclusive and hurtful, forced prayer in schools really is. No one is prohibited from praying at school, or anywhere else. However, group prayer in schools forces those who do not hold the same religious beliefs as the group to stand aside and feel ashamed or left out, or to be required to pray with the others. Try to imagine yourself as a student in a school where your religion, whether it be Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Jewish, Pagan, Hindu, or what have you, is the minority. For supporters of prayer in schools, this might be a hard thing to do, since most of those who support this are members of religions that are in the majority, not the minority.
